Preventive maintenance of odour abatement equipment

How and when maintenance work should be carried out to prevent breakdowns, optimise costs and prolong the life of your odour abatement system

To ensure maximum efficiency of odour abatement systems and reduce emissions, constant and thorough maintenance is essential.

Regular operations, such as the optimisation of scrubbers, DKFil and mysting systems, ensure optimal performance and regulatory compliance with the required abatement standards. Identifying critical parts, maintaining proper functioning and planning targeted interventions allows you to optimise costs and resources, prolong plant life and prevent unexpected failures.

In this article we explore the importance of preventive maintenance and its role in extending plant life.

Why preventive maintenance is a strategic investment

Odour abatement systems need regular checks to maintain high performance.
Scheduled maintenance avoids:

  • sudden breakdowns, avoiding downtime that interrupts production and generates unexpected costs;
  • reduction in plant life, preventing accelerated wear and tear and the need for premature replacement;
  • decreased efficiency, which could lead to increased odour emissions and inconvenience to the surrounding community;
  • risk of regulatory non-compliance, avoiding penalties or loss of environmental certifications;
  • increased operating costs, due to reduced high energy consumption and frequent repair work;
  • costs for maintenance personnel, thanks to planned interventions instead of costly breakdown emergencies;
  • routine repairs, avoiding complex and costly large-scale interventions;
  • safety hazards, ensuring a safer working environment for staff.

The problems of non-maintenance

Many companies realise too late the damage caused by a lack of preventive maintenance.
Among the most common problems are:

  • accumulation of residues in filters or atomising systems, with loss of efficiency;
  • premature wear of critical components, such as pumps and fans, compromising air flow or treatment capacity;
  • malfunctions due to setting errors or lack of periodic calibration;
  • prolonged downtime for repairs, which could be avoided with regular checks;
  • emissions exceeding legal limits, putting the company at risk of fines or litigation;

These problems not only increase costs, but also compromise the company's reputation.

How often to do maintenance

Every plant, whether it is based on the use of scrubbers, DKFil or atomisation systems, requires tailor-made maintenance based on its characteristics and level of use.
These are some indications according to the type of system:

  • Osmogenic barrier: twice a year, increasing to three if there is a large number of nozzles or a particular piping arrangement;
  • Zephiro UTS: from a minimum of three times a year to one visit every month, depending on the use of the system and the customer's needs;
  • DKFil®: twice a year for general maintenance, once a year for filter mass replacement;
  • Scrubber: a minimum of twice a year to check the functioning of all mechanical parts and the levels of washing solutions. All in accordance with the use and needs of the customer.

Maintenance services

To support companies in the effective management of their odour abatement plants, we offer preventive maintenance services that differ in the number of annual visits and spare parts.

  • Routine maintenance
    Includes at least two annual visits to ensure plant efficiency. Includes labour, travel and telephone support. Spare parts are excluded.
  • Maintenance Total Level
    Includes inspection of the plant and replacement of wear parts. Non-wearing parts are excluded.
  • Full Service Contract
    Ideal for Zephiro UTS systems, it offers full coverage with maintenance visits 3 to 12 times a year. It includes the supply of odour neutralising products and spare parts, with continuous telephone support.

Additional services

In addition to maintenance services, Labiotest also offers other services:

  • spare parts kit: to deal with any emergency situations;
  • telephone assistance: the first diagnosis of the problem can be made over the phone, providing initial assistance;
  • customised approach: maintenance contracts are very flexible and can be adapted to the customer's needs and the type of system;
  • expertise: our staff carries out both the installation and commissioning of the systems, which is why we can guarantee a better service;
  • product consumption: in our offers for the supply of installations, we also include the quotation for the maintenance service for two visits/year guaranteeing the supply of the product according to actual consumption.

System revamping with SOS Service

When an odour abatement plant becomes obsolete or inefficient, revamping is the ideal solution to restore its performance and bring it up to the latest technological and regulatory standards.

With our SOS Service (Sustainable Odour Service), we offer customised interventions to improve and optimise existing plants in compliance with regulations such as Legislative Decree 152/2006 and BAT (Best Available Technologies).

Conclusions

Adopting a proactive maintenance strategy not only prevents unexpected breakdowns, but also improves operational efficiency, extends plant life and contributes to environmental sustainability.
